bye bye analog: Digital TV subscriptions up in China

From Variety: Digital TV subscriptions up in China: Digital TV subscriptions in China reached 12 million at the end of 2006, up from 6.5 million, according to a statement from the State Administration for Radio, Film and Television.

Figures mean that over 9% of cable TV households have digital connections. A further rise to 20 million is expected by the end of this year according to Hong Kong-based research house Media Partners Asia.

Digital has replaced analog in 25 cities following moves to subsidize installation of new set top boxes. But progress in Beijing and Shanghai has been slow, despite the drive to increase penetration ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Separately, Shanghai Media Group and China Telecom subsidiary BesTV reported that their BesTV joint venture now has 100,000 subscribers to its Internet Protocol TV service. That is up from 60,000 at the end of the 2006.
