Dance to Pop and Hip-Hop from China and America: Kanye West and Chinese Supergirls on the same Stage in Vegas!
Fusion night club will host the 2 day event that brings together pop and hip-hop singers from China and American. The performance coincides with the 2007 Chinese Lunar New Year and will be aired by Hunan TV. After looking at the event details, I am wondering if they will be on the same stage since the event is split into 2 days - Chinese perfomers on Feb 13th and American performers on Feb. 14th. I will be on the West Coast during those dates so I am going to look into this! The question is - which Supergirl will sing? If anyone has additional information about this, please let me know! Tickets are $130-$180 through Ticketmaster. And don't forget to include hotel stay since this is in Vegas.
I am wondering who the producers are. Is this part of a Hollywood-China media partnership? Who initiated this idea?
I am incredibly excited about this performance because pop culture has traditionally flowed from West into the East. Chinese and Taiwanese pop singers usually adopt western style pop music and style. However, as the name of this production infers - it is a fusion. So here we have Supergirls, which is inspired from the American Idol show model. But Hunan TV took the model and remixed it with Chinese flavor. Singers are affiliated with their local provinces, where as in American Idol, singers are highlighted for their individual background without a huge emphasis on their original home-state. Also, the voting system for supergirls is heavily predicated on their province.
Chinese pop music is a fusion, just like American Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop is about sampling and remixing, and producing something entirely original from found material. Run-D.M.C. sampled rock artist, Aerosmith's, Walk This Way. Well the same is being down by Chinese artists. And what's exciting is that when I watch Chinese TV, many of the artists are sampling older Chinese singers that only older people listen to, but now they are making it their own.
So for those who argue that Western culture is taking over Chinese culture - or that the Chinese only copy Western culture, I think they are not understanding the larger dynamics of sharing, cultural feedback, and youth culture. Just as American hip-hop came into it's own by innovating genre blending of Rock, Funk, Jazz, Salsa and etc - and cultural fusions, such as Puerto Rican and Black culture, Chinese pop artists are also innovating global music sharing and cultural flows with pop, hip-hop, and rock. This concert signals a more symbiotic relationship for Chinese and American pop culture.
