King of Chinese Foreign Films: King Kong 100 million元yuan and rising
Out of the 20 foreign films that are allowed per year in China, only 4 have made it past the 100 million元yuan ($12.4 million). King Kong is now the fifth movie to join the ranks.
I wonder what made people want to pay 50 元yuan for the theater version versus 5 元yuan for a street DVD. I suspect that is has something to do with experiencing the size of the main character-King Kong and all the dramatic building implodements. Note that two of the previous 4 movies that have made it are also based on really gigantic objects - Titantic's Ship, Pearl Harbor's Harbor and now all the movies in this rank, except for The Fugitive, are adventures with lots of explosions
If movies are made based on visual experiences, then that's what will make middle class urban Chinese kids and families pay the steep theater ticket price. It might be time to bring in IMAX folks.
