Tactile Movie Editing Cards for Editing Newbies
Movie Cards allows you to print out photo stills from your imported digital video. Each photo has a bar code that contains the sequence time code. Once photos are printed, you can do real time physical editing by scanning over the specific photo's bar code - and inputting the start and end frame into the scanner! It's like tangible movie editing!
This product is targeted for little kids, but I think this is perfect for all ages. If I used this product to teach youth media, I would integrate it as a story-boarding and literacy development tool. Other have suggested that you can make a flip-book.
Although I think this is an innovative spin on editing, I think this would best marketed to teaching old people how to edit. When I teach editing to youth, I've never had a problem with young people grasping the process of "non-linearness." And when I want to give them more tactile examples, we just storyboard on pieces of paper and play with the cards. And I always start by teaching them to be fearless with cutting - and I encourage them to try different sequences to their story. I am usually screaming - "cut - move that - cut - apple T- move it there - try that out!"
I definitely see the value in Movie Cards, but by time you set up the equipment and print those cards out, I bet your youth will already have finished editing a cool 5 minute narrative. This product is best for those who have a hard time grasping "non-linearness" - e.g. older folks. Kids and adolescents now grow up in a very non-linear digital world - they get it this stuff right away without a need for any special tools.
